 Food Drive for August

During the month of August we will be collecting non-perishable foods for the RAEFP. Please place you donations in the food barrel in the narthex. The items that are most needed are: dry cereals, peanut butter, canned meats, juice and powdered milk.

August Is Church School Sabbath . . . Mostly

The Sundays of August (including Labor Day Sunday this year) are the time set aside for Church School vacation.  There will be no classes for children or youth on these Sundays, nor will we hold the usual 9:45 a.m. Opening Assembly.  Adult classes will decide for themselves whether they will continue to meet in August.  Please check with your Church School teacher as to whether or not your adult class will meet. Children’s Time, the children’s extended hour during worship, and nursery will continue throughout August.  Our Church School Sabbath month provides an opportunity for teachers and leaders to rest and renew in preparation for the opening of a new Church School year in September.

Adopt-A-Plot Meeting – Saturday, July 26, 9:00 a.m.   You may have noticed that the grounds around our church have been looking rather neglected this year.  In our last Facilities Team meeting, we discussed this issue and decided to renew the Adopt-a-Plot plan of caring for our grounds.  This plan involves church members signing up for one area of our church gardens, then weeding and caring for that plot as best suits their individual schedules.  In an effort to revive this program, there will be a brief organizational meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 26 to assign plots and answer any questions that people may have.  If you would like to assist with this program or would like more information, please attend the brief meeting on July 26 or call the church office and leave your name for a return call from a member of the Facilities Team.

 Rivermont Area Emergency Food Pantry

Summer is the season for variety; therefore, you will notice that the youth group is engaged in a variety of activities in the coming weeks, mainly on our Wednesday meeting days. For example, we will be involved with local missions on July 23 and 30, serving in the College Hill neighborhood with Camp Timothy and serving in our own backyard, mulching the playground.  Three of our church members – Bonnie Benedict, Amy Sale, and Hannah Snead – work at Camp Timothy throughout the summer, and we look forward to joining them on Wednesday, July 23.  The Facilities Team needs some help with their annual mulching and maintenance of the playground, so we will help them on Wednesday, July 30.

Fun on Friday – On Friday, August 1, we will travel to the LaHaye Ice Center for a cool evening of skating.  Meet at the church at 6:30 p.m. and bring $5 for skate rental.

Ropes/Team Building Course on August 6 – On Wednesday, August 6 we meet at 1:00 p.m. and travel to Camp Kum Ba Yah for the “High Ropes Course.”  This should be a lot of fun and a great team building adventure.  Each participant should bring $25. We will return to the church by 4 p.m.  Parents will need to sign a permission slip.

August 13/14 – Meet at church at 5 p.m. for our overnight at Smith Mountain Lake, hosted by Katie Johnson and her family!

Craft Morning – The OWLS will meet on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 for lunch with Pat Blackburn.  Times and details will be forthcoming.

Thanks to Chris Crickenberger for assistance with a computer crisis in the church office.   Chris’ skill and resources had our office computer back up and running again within a very short time.  Thanks, Chris, for sharing your time and skill, as well as an upgraded computer!

Van for Sale – The Congregational Council has recommended that we sell our 1996 Chevy Astro six passenger van.  We thought it best to advertise this intent in the church newsletter, in case anyone within our church family or newsletter readership would have an interest in acquiring this vehicle.

 Sister Mary Ann’s Gasoline

Sister Mary Ann, who worked for a home health agency, was out making her rounds visiting homebound patients when she ran out of gas.  As luck would have it, a gas station was just a block away.  She walked to the station to borrow a gas can and buy some gas.  However, the attendant told her that the only gas can he owned had been loaned out, so she would have to wait until it was returned.

Since she was on her way to visit a patient, she decided not to wait and walked back to the car, looking for something she could fill with gas.  She spotted the bedpan she was taking to her patient.  Always resourceful, Sister Mary Ann carried the bedpan to the station, filled it with gasoline, and carried the full bedpan back to her car.

As she was pouring the gas from the bedpan into her tank, two Baptists watched from across the street.  One of them turned to the other and said, “If her car starts, I’m turning Catholic!”

 Peakland People

An update from Laura Arrington: Well, it appears that we are finally completing our disaster relief work in Iowa.  We are set to depart on June 29 and head back to Denver.  I am glad to be finishing up for this has been quite a challenge; but I do see what a big difference we have made to this community.  For that, I am glad we were here.  I am looking forward to having a little break – a long weekend for the Fourth of July.  Then we head to Port Gibson, Mississippi for our next assignment.  I guess that is all the news for now.  Laura Arrington (Laura’s email address is lrarrington04@hotmail.com)
