Columbarium and Memorial Garden

The Columbarium and Memorial Garden of Peakland Baptist Church are designed to proved an appropriate place on the church grounds for the inurnment or the scattering of ashes after cremation and to memorialize those interred at this and other locations.

Columbarium is derived from the Latin work columba (dove), the symbol of God's Spirit and the Christian symbol of peace.  A Columbarium is a wall specially constructed with niches which provide a permanent, dedicated space for the placement (inurnment) of cremains, the cremated remains of the departed.  The Memorial Garden is a place set apart for those who choose to scatter cremains in the garden and to place a memorial plaque on the pedestal in the center of the Columbarium.

In the viewpoint of our congregation, the Columbarium and Memorial Garden are hallowed ground, sacred to the memory of those who have departed from our earthly fellowship.  Planning a hallowed place of interment or inurnment within or adjacent to the church revives the ancient Christian tradition of having the mortal remains of members of the Christian community located close to the place of community worship.  Since the church is the center of life--birth, baptism, marriage--it is appropriate that death and burial should be centered there as well.

If you wish more specific information about the use of our Columbarium and Memorial Garden, or how to reserve a niche, please call the church office.
